It features a solid 925 sterling silver base (rather than a base metal), a layer of 18k gold of at least 5 microns thick (compared to often less than 1 micron for gold plating), and significantly greater durability and resistance to tarnishing. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, ruby is the second hardest gemstone after diamond.
