Vermeil is 925 silver coated with a layer of gold of at least 2.5 microns. The gold layer protects against oxidation, making it more resistant to tarnishing than plain silver. However, the gold layer can wear over time with friction. To extend its lifespan, avoid contact with water and chemical products, and remove your ring before sleeping.

925 silver is generally well tolerated by sensitive skin and is hypoallergenic for the vast majority of people. However, the 7.5% copper in the alloy can occasionally cause a reaction in those with a strong sensitivity to copper. In this case, vermeil is an excellent alternative: the gold layer creates a barrier between the skin and the alloy.
