How to Identify a Genuine Ruby: A Complete Guide

7 tests to distinguish the real from the fake, from synthetic stones to spinels

The ruby market is saturated with imitations and synthetic stones. A vendor at a Bangkok market recently handed me an "exceptional Burmese emerald" at an unbeatable price. Two minutes with a 10x loupe revealed the deception: a red spinel.

This guide shares the 7 identification tests we use ourselves in the workshop: hardness, characteristic inclusions, UV fluorescence, and gemological certificate. These tests distinguish a natural Ruby from a glass imitation, a garnet, a red spinel, or a synthetic Ruby.

The price difference justifies your vigilance: an unheated Burmese Ruby can reach £8,500 to £42,000 per carat A price that seems too low is always a warning sign.

Understanding what a true Ruby is

A ruby is a red corundum: aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) coloured by chromium. This is the strict gemological definition. Without chromium, there is no ruby.

Common confusions fall into three categories. The first is imitations, which are chemically different: tinted glass, resin, doublets (a thin layer of ruby bonded onto glass). The second is synthetics, which are true rubies chemically, but created in a laboratory: Verneuil rubies, flux rubies, hydrothermal rubies. They share the same composition, the same hardness, and the same refractive index as a natural ruby. Only their inclusions and certain optical properties betray them. Finally, there are natural substitutes: garnet, red spinel, red tourmaline. These are genuine gemstones, but they are not rubies.

A synthetic ruby remains a ruby in the chemical sense. Yet its price is 10 to 50 times lower than a natural stone of equivalent quality. The challenge of authentication is therefore twofold: identifying the nature of the stone (natural or synthetic) and ruling out outright imitations.

The hardness test: Ruby scratches glass

Ruby is the second hardest stone in the world, with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. Only diamond (10) surpasses it. This hardness makes it a material that scratches glass (5.5 Mohs) without itself being scratched.

The test is straightforward: gently rub the stone against a glass plate. If it scratches the glass and remains intact, that is a good sign. Tinted glass or resin will show scratches immediately.

A word of caution This test cannot distinguish a ruby from a red spinel (Mohs hardness 8, which also scratches glass), nor from a synthetic ruby (identical hardness). It serves as a first filter to eliminate crude imitations, not as a definitive verdict.

An almandine garnet (7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale) also holds up fairly well, but scratches more easily under a tempered steel blade. The hardness test is therefore useful, but insufficient on its own.

Examining inclusions with a 10x loupe

The natural inclusions are the signature of an authentic ruby. Paradoxically, a ruby that is too clean is suspicious: it may be synthetic.

The typical inclusions found in a natural ruby include rutile needles (known as "silk"), trapped crystals (calcite, zircon, apatite), healed fractures, and irregular growth zones. These inclusions form during crystallisation under natural geological conditions, often at high pressure and temperature.

Rubies from Mogok (Burma) often contain a dense silk, which gives the rough stone a slightly milky appearance but, when properly oriented, produces the asterism effect (a six-rayed star). Rubies from Mozambique frequently display angular crystals and healing channels. Rubies from Madagascar show mica inclusions and banded growth zones.

Synthetic rubies, on the other hand, are either too clean (flame-fusion Verneuil rubies, almost free of inclusions), or scattered with round gas bubbles (flux rubies), or marked by characteristic curved growth lines (Czochralski rubies). These signs can be detected with a 10x loupe or under a microscope.

A professional gemologist will routinely examine a suspect stone under a microscope. This is the decisive test for distinguishing natural from synthetic.

UV fluorescence test

Under a shortwave UV lamp (254 nm), a natural ruby typically emits a strong red fluorescence. This fluorescence is caused by traces of chromium, the element responsible for a ruby's red colour.

Burmese rubies often display the most vivid fluorescence, sometimes described as "blood red" under UV light. Thai or Cambodian rubies, which have a higher iron content, fluoresce less intensely or not at all, as iron acts as a fluorescence suppressant.

Synthetic rubies fluoresce differently depending on their manufacturing method. Verneuil rubies may display an orange fluorescence or an overly uniform red, betraying their origin. Modern hydrothermal rubies are designed to mimic natural fluorescence, making this test less reliable than it once was.

The imitations (glass, garnet, spinel) generally do not fluoresce red, or display an inconsistent UV response (green, yellow, or no fluorescence at all).

The UV test is quick and non-destructive. It serves as an effective filter, but should be combined with inclusion observation for a complete diagnosis.

Ruby or red spinel? The definitive test

The red spinel has deceived royal courts for centuries. The "Black Prince's Ruby" set in the British Imperial Crown is, in fact, a 170-carat spinel. The "Timur Ruby" in Queen Elizabeth II's crown is likewise a spinel.

The confusion is understandable: same colour, same brilliance, similar hardness (8 on the Mohs scale for spinel versus 9 for ruby). For a long time, both stones were sold under the same name.

The key difference: ruby is birefringent (doubly refractive), while spinel is singly refractive. In practice, when examining the back facet of a cut ruby under a microscope, one can observe a doubling of the edges. A gemologist's refractometer measures two refractive indices for ruby (1.762 and 1.770), and only one for spinel (1.718).

This doubling is subtle, but it is the definitive test. Without the proper equipment, it is difficult to determine conclusively. A professional gemologist uses a refractometer and resolves the question within seconds.

The story of one of our clients illustrates this pitfall perfectly: he brought us an inherited ring, sold by a Parisian jeweller in the 1950s as a "Burmese ruby." After analysis, we confirmed it was in fact a red spinel of exceptional quality, which remains a beautiful stone in its own right, but not a ruby. Its value was reduced by two thirds. The ring was reappraised and its insurance coverage adjusted accordingly.

Ruby or garnet? Colour and density

The almandine garnet is the most common imitation of ruby found on stone markets. Its reddish-violet colour can closely resemble a mid-quality ruby.

The differences are numerous. Garnet tends toward a purplish violet, sometimes brownish, whereas ruby displays a pure red, distinctly red to pinkish red. Under incandescent light, garnet loses its brilliance and shifts toward brown, while ruby retains its saturation.

The density test is conclusive: ruby has a density of 4.0 g/cm³, while garnet's density ranges between 3.6 and 4.3 g/cm³ depending on the variety (almandine, pyrope, spessartite). In practice, the stone is weighed in air, then in water, and the density is calculated using hydrostatic weighing. A standard laboratory test.

Garnet shows no red UV fluorescence. It is also slightly less hard (7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale): a hardened steel blade can scratch it, whereas it will simply glide across a ruby.

Requesting a gemological certificate

For a significant purchase (stone over 1 carat, price above £3,400), a certificate from a recognised gemological laboratory is essential. The three global references are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AIGS (Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences, Bangkok), and Gübelin (Switzerland).

A valid certificate states:

  • Nature of the stone: natural Ruby or synthetic Ruby (clearly indicated)
  • Heat treatment: heated or unheated (95% of rubies on the market are heated to enhance their colour)
  • Geographic origin: Burma (Mogok), Mozambique, Madagascar, Thailand, and so on
  • Carat weight, dimensions, cut, and colour according to the laboratory's reference system

A "heated" certificate is not a negative mark: it is the standard treatment, accepted by the profession for decades. Only unheated Rubies command astronomical prices. An unheated Burmese Ruby of "pigeon blood" quality can reach £42,000 per carat at auction.

We systematically decline non-certified stones when the price exceeds £1,250. A seller who refuses to provide a certificate should be considered a red flag.

How Much Does a Ruby Cost? Pricing by Quality ›

Price per carat: the warning sign

Price is a reliable indicator of authenticity. A natural, jewellery-grade Ruby typically costs:

  • Heated: £850 to £4,250 per carat, depending on size, colour, and origin
  • Unheated, fine quality: £4,250 to £12,500 per carat
  • Unheated Burmese "pigeon blood": £8,500 to £42,000 per carat, and considerably more for exceptional stones

A synthetic Ruby costs £45 to £170 per carat, roughly 10 to 50 times less. A glass imitation: a few pounds per gram.

The most common pitfall we encounter: clients share links from competing websites featuring "Ruby rings" at £250 for a one-carat stone. On closer inspection of the descriptions, often written in small print, these turn out to be synthetic Rubies. Before comparing prices, our advice is always the same: always verify the exact nature of the stone (natural, treated, or synthetic).

A price that seems too good to be true is never a bargain. It is a warning sign.

Ruby colour gradients at Mayuri

Our rubies come in two red gradients, depending on the metal. The rosy gradient (pale pink to mid-rose Ruby) is set in vermeil: a solid 925 Silver base with a yellow gold layer of at least 5 microns (French standard). The classic red gradient (a rich, saturated red) is mounted exclusively in 18K yellow gold.

This distinction is not arbitrary: it reflects our positioning. 18K solid gold is at the heart of our offering, vermeil exists and sells well, but for the most saturated rubies (and the most precious), we favour gold.

Cuts vary by design: round brilliant by default, except for the Moksha and Shanti styles, which feature rubies in a baguette cut, and Indrani, which showcases a princess cut (square, with chevron facets). These cuts are chosen for their optical effect: the baguette elongates the hand, the round brilliant maximises the fire of the stone, and the princess cut creates a bold geometric focal point.

Ruby or pink Sapphire? The blurred boundary

The boundary between a ruby and a pink Sapphire is subjective. Both are corundum: the only difference is the saturation of the red.

The gemological convention: red corundum = ruby, pink corundum = pink Sapphire. But where does red end and pink begin? There is no strict international standard. Some laboratories classify a deep, intense pink as a ruby; others classify it as a pink Sapphire.

This uncertainty has real commercial consequences: a 1-carat ruby can be worth twice as much as a pink Sapphire of equivalent quality. The certifying laboratory's decision alone can shift the price dramatically.

During our gemology training, our professor brought in two corundums: one synthetic, one natural. The exercise was to learn to see the difference under a loupe. One was too clean, with curved growth lines. The other was dotted with silk and micro-crystals. That moment stays with you: it is the one where you understand that the eye develops, that the stone speaks, and that it tells its own geological story.

The lesson applies equally to colour. A pure, saturated, intense red: ruby. A soft, delicate, translucent pink: pink Sapphire. Between the two lies a grey area where the laboratory makes the final call.

Price is also a telling indicator: a quality natural Ruby never costs £45 per carat.

Is the Mayuri vermeil Ruby a real Ruby?

Yes. Our vermeil rubies are natural rubies (natural red corundum), certified and heat-treated (standard treatment). The term "vermeil" refers to the metal: solid 925 Silver coated with a layer of yellow gold of at least 5 microns (French standard). The stone remains a natural ruby. The rosy gradient we set in vermeil corresponds to pale pink to medium pink rubies, while our deep red (saturated) rubies are set exclusively in 18K gold.

Why does my Ruby change colour depending on the light?

A natural Ruby retains its colour under all lighting conditions, unlike certain colour-change stones such as alexandrite or colour-change garnet. What you may observe is most likely a variation in saturation: under incandescent (warm) light, the red appears richer and more saturated, while under fluorescent (cool) light, it can look slightly cooler or more pinkish. A fine Ruby maintains its dominant red hue regardless of the light source. If the stone shifts towards brown or green under certain lighting, it is not a Ruby; it may be a garnet, a tourmaline, or a spinel.

Can you buy an unheated Ruby for under £4,250?

Yes, for small stones (< 0.5 carat) or lower-grade qualities (pale colour, visible inclusions). A high-quality unheated Ruby (saturated red, good transparency, > 1 carat) rarely falls below this threshold. Unheated Rubies represent less than 5% of the market: most are heated to enhance their colour, a stable treatment that has been accepted by the trade for decades. A quality heated Ruby remains an excellent stone, with a far better value-for-money ratio than an equivalent unheated one.

Conclusion

Identifying a genuine ruby requires both method and vigilance. The 7 tests we use in our atelier, hardness, inclusions, UV fluorescence, birefringence (to rule out spinel), density (to rule out garnet), certification and price, allow us to distinguish the natural from the synthetic, and the authentic from the imitation.

A gemological certificate remains the only definitive verdict. For any purchase above 0.5 carat, always request a GIA, AIGS or Gübelin certificate stating the nature (natural or synthetic), treatment and origin.
